Third places—like coffee shops, parks, libraries, and community centers—serve as vital gathering spots outside of home and work, fostering conversation, creativity, and a sense of togetherness. Third places are crucial to a vibrant civic society and a thriving local economy. This site explores how these spaces bring people together and why they matter.
Third places are social environments separate from home (first place) and work or school (second place), where people gather, interact, and build community. These spaces—such as coffee shops, libraries, parks, community centers, and bookstores—foster informal social connections, encourage open conversation, and promote a sense of belonging. Sociologist Ray Oldenburg, who coined the term, emphasized their role in strengthening communities by providing neutral, inclusive, and accessible places for people to engage with one another outside of structured obligations.

Lamppost Coffee in Downtown Round Rock is a popular third place for people to spend their time. It offers a welcoming environment to relax, read, and talk to others over a signature "Lamba Latte." When Ray Oldenburg first defined third places, coffee shops were a quintessential example. Oldenburg believed that hangout spots, like coffee shops, were the heart of a community and were necessary for one to live a balanced and happy life.

Zilker Metropolitan Park is Austin's first metropolitan park. The park is a hub for various activities like swimming at Barton Springs, and the home of free community events like the Zilker Hillside Theater. Public parks are another great example of a third place because they are neutral, accesible and open spaces for anyone to gather and hangout. In this picture, people sprawl out on the lawn at Zilker park on a sunny spring day, enjoying the company of other Austinites.
